Why should you consider Dental Implants?

Posted on: 23rd April 2019

Dental implants are now a well-accepted way of replacing missing teeth amongst those who;

  • Were born without teeth
  • Have lost teeth due to an accident or significant trauma
  • Unable/unwilling to have dentures
  • Cosmetic improvements

Over 10,000 implant procedures are performed in the UK each Year and they have grown in popularity. Most implant procedures being performed for those over 50 are due to being unable/unwilling to have dentures or cosmetic improvements.

#Reason 1: No longer living in fear

Tooth loss can affect your confidence drastically and can lead to other insecurities within your social-life and functioning in public. When you have lost a tooth the fear of it happening again significantly increases, leading you to worry about what you can eat, if it will affect your other teeth and what will others think of you. At Dental Excellence Harewood, we understand these fears and we have helped change our patient’s lives by giving them confidence in their smiles.

Amanda’s Journey

Dental implants don’t only restore dignity, self-esteem and confidence. They give you a normal life. You will no longer feel embarrassed, live in fear of losing another tooth or have to surf the menu to find the softest foods – At Dental Excellence our patients leave happier and in a better state of oral health.

#Reason 2: Rebuilding your confidence

In complex cases where patients have already been suffering from their teeth failing them due to a long history of gum disease, are often left with low self-esteem about their smile. At Dental Excellence we offer restorative procedures that are completed within the same day. In other words, our patients arrive at the surgery in the morning with their own teeth and leave the same day with an implant supported bridge, so at no time are they faced with wearing dentures. This procedure has psychological benefits, with patients maintaining a functional dentition without feeling that they have no teeth. Other longstanding oral health complications that may cause patients to lose confidence in their smile;

  • Discolouration
  • Minor tooth irregularities
  • Chips/Wear and tear of the teeth
  • Gaps

These common problems can be treated by undergoing cosmetic dentistry treatments.

#Reason 3: Everyday advantages

Dental implants have a number of benefits that range from improving our patient’s self-esteem, smile and oral hygiene, but these are not the only benefits that have been reported after treatment;

  • Improved Appearance – Dental implants, look and feel like they are your own teeth and are designed to fuse with bone so they become permanent.
  • Improved Speech – More common amongst patients who had poorly fitted dentures.
  • Improved Comfort – Dental implants eliminate the discomfort that is often found with removable dentures.
  • Easier Eating – Dentures can make chewing difficult, but with dental implants your bite will become normal, allowing you to eat your favourite foods with confidence and without pain.
  • Improved Self-esteem – Dental implants are designed to give patients back their smiles and help them feel better about themselves.
  • Improved Oral Health – Dental implants do not require reducing other teeth and nearing teeth are not altered to support the implants, meaning more of your own teeth are left intact. This improves long-term oral health.
  • Durability – Dental implants are designed to be durable and with good care, many dental implants can last a lifetime.
  • Convenience – Dental implants eliminate the embarrassing inconvenience of removable dentures, as well as the need for messy adhesives that keep them in place.

#Reason 4: Increase in oral hygiene & overall health

Oral hygiene is the first examination every dentist conducts when patients come into practice and it is one of the leading factors to other complications such as;

  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Dementia
  • Respiratory Infections
  • Diabetes complications

Practising proper dental care is more important in ways you might not have thought of before and with dental implants your oral hygiene and health is drastically improved – dental implants allow easier access between teeth, improving your overall cleaning process. What you need to know about your treatment

During the treatment process, we let our patients know about each stage, so they are comfortable and are up to date with their progress. Dental implant surgery is often done in several stages, this is so the jawbone has time to heal completely around the implant before more work is done;

  1. The damaged tooth/teeth are removed (If they have not already come out)
  2. The jawbone is prepped for surgery (This may also include some degree of bone grafting.)
  3. Once the jawbone has fully healed the implant is then inserted into the gum line.
  4. The jawbone is then given more time to heal.
  5. The abutment is then placed onto the implant (this is the piece that screws into the implant) and then the artificial tooth/teeth are attached, completing your full implant.

Dental implant surgery can take up to several months. This is to allow your jaw time to heal and prepare for the final installation of your implants – this lengthy process is to ensure that the implant takes to your jawbone, without a strong jawbone placement the implant will not take. During a Dental implant, you will be under local anaesthesia, this will completely block the pain from your mouth during the procedure.  In some cases, sedation is offered to the patient when appropriate. Dental procedures can be daunting and making the decision about your treatments with your dental practice can make some patients quite anxious. At Dental Excellence Harewood, we put nervous patients at ease; we are sympathetic, compassionate and understanding. We are happy to let you take things at your own pace, whilst gently offering encouragement.
